Edinburgh is the starting point for all our small group tours of Scotland. Whether you're joining our 7-day Highland adventure or the 10-day grand tour, your journey begins in Scotland's historic capital.
We've created this guide to help you arrive prepared. Understanding Edinburgh before your tour means you'll appreciate the contrast when we venture into the wild Highlands—and you'll have context for the stories your guide shares along the way.

Edinburgh is well-connected with direct flights from North America and excellent rail links from London.
Located just 8 miles from the city centre. The Airlink 100 bus runs every 10 minutes and takes 30 minutes to reach the city (£4.50 single). Taxis cost approximately £25-35.
Scotland's main railway hub sits in the heart of the city between Old Town and New Town. Direct trains from London King's Cross take 4.5 hours. Most central hotels are a 10-15 minute walk.
Many Edinburgh hotels offer luggage storage if you arrive before check-in time. Some premium hotels offer early check-in for an additional fee—worth considering after a long transatlantic flight.
Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you only have a few hours, here's how to choose.

Best for: History lovers and atmosphere seekers

Best for: Elegance and green spaces
Our recommendation: If you only have a few hours, stick to the Old Town. The Royal Mile gives you the essence of Edinburgh's history in one walkable stretch.
After a long journey—especially from North America—your body needs time to adjust. The biggest mistake travellers make is cramming too much into Day 1.
Pro tip: A leisurely walk, a good meal, and an early night will serve you far better than a packed itinerary. Save your energy—the Highlands are calling.
